Inspection & insurance documentation
Southern Nevada hail events are infrequent but severe. When a storm cell delivers 1–2 inch hail on a Las Vegas afternoon, the damage to vinyl siding, stucco, fiber cement, and wood trim is immediate and significant. The challenge is that hail damage to siding is often subtle — visible only in raking light or under specific inspection conditions — yet clear enough to support a full insurance claim when properly documented.

Types of siding in Las Vegas and how hail affects each
Stucco (most common)
Stucco is Las Vegas's predominant exterior material. Large hail (1.5 inch or greater) creates visible spall or star-crack patterns in the finish coat. Smaller hail leaves impacts that are often invisible to casual inspection but visible under raking light or photography at a low angle. Stucco hail damage is a legitimate insurance claim item — do not let an adjuster dismiss small impacts as cosmetic without a documented second opinion.
Vinyl siding
Vinyl siding cracks or punctures cleanly under hail impact. Damage is usually obvious and well-documented in photos. Insurance typically covers full panel replacement for panels that cannot be matched or that show structural cracking.
Fiber cement (HardiePlank)
Impact-resistant by design but still susceptible to chipping and surface cracking from larger hail. Fiber cement damage may be claimable even when damage appears minor, because surface damage compromises the paint layer that protects the cementite substrate from moisture.
Wood trim and fascia
Soft wood trim shows impact marks clearly — these are commonly accepted in insurance scopes as additional items when a roof claim is filed for the same storm.
Soft metal as evidence
Even if siding damage is subtle, check aluminum fascia, soffit vents, AC fin coils, downspouts, and window screens. Soft metal impacts are the clearest, most objective evidence of a hail event. If soft metals show impact, siding damage in the same storm is credible and documentable.
How to document siding hail damage for insurance
1
Photograph in raking light (morning or evening)
Low-angle light reveals surface impacts that midday sun washes out. Take photos from 4–6 feet away at a horizontal angle to each siding section.
2
Mark impacts with chalk before adjuster visit
Circle each visible impact with chalk for the adjuster visit. Chalk washes off — if disputed, the underlying impact is still visible under inspection.
3
Get a contractor inspection report
A professional inspection report with calibrated measurements of impact density (impacts per 10 sq ft) is more persuasive in a claims dispute than photos alone.
4
Have your contractor present at adjuster inspection
This is the single most effective step for ensuring all visible damage is included in the claim scope.
Frequently asked questions
My stucco looks fine — could there still be hail damage?
Yes. Hail impacts on stucco can be invisible in direct sunlight but clearly visible in raking light or under close inspection. We use a combination of raking light photography and direct surface inspection to document impacts that an adjuster might dismiss on a quick walkthrough.
Does hail damage siding void my homeowner's warranty?
Manufacturer warranties on siding materials typically cover defects, not storm damage. Insurance is the correct mechanism for storm damage. Filing a claim does not affect your product warranty.
What if my insurer says the siding damage is cosmetic and not covered?
In most Nevada policies, 'cosmetic damage' exclusions apply specifically to damage that does not compromise the structural or weatherproofing function of the material. A surface crack in stucco that allows moisture infiltration, or vinyl that is punctured, is not cosmetic. Challenge cosmetic denials with a written contractor assessment that addresses the functional impact of the damage.
Can you repair hail-damaged stucco to match existing?
We can repair the damage and match the texture. As with all stucco patching, exact color matching to weathered existing stucco is difficult. For prominent elevations, we often recommend full elevation recoating for a seamless result.
